Unsolicited Advice 2

Trolling through the dating section of Yahoo!Answers, I've compiled a few questions in need of attention that I think I might try my hand at answering. Granted, my advice is likely to be horrible, but I think it's unlikely that the authors of these questions will read this blog anyway. And if they do, and happen to take my advice...they are more than welcome to pen a guest entry to let me know just how horribly I screwed them over.

NOTE: All questions are paraphrased, and all names are invented for this entry.

01. HE'S OBSESSED WITH ME! - Donna
"This guy has liked me for a while, and now he's doing everything he can to make sure he sees me whenever he can during the day and after school. I have been telling him that I just want to be friends, but he still really likes me and doesn't listen.

"He and I flirt a lot, and I don't want to be mean, but I just want to stay friends. How can I be nice about asking him to back off a little?"

Donna,
I think the first problem might be that you're flirting with him. That's sending a mixed signal, and it's really more cruel than anything else. As a naturally flirty person myself, I can understand the desire to continue to do so, as it can be very fun, but it's impeding on your ability to be this guy's friend.

If you don't want to date him, don't lead him on. If you just want to be friends with him, then you're going to need to sit him down and explain that to him. Let him know that you're not interested in him romantically, tell him that you're not going to flirt with him anymore, and if he really values you as a friend, he'll be willing to stop pursuing you so aggressively.

02. IS THIS ANNOYING? - Everett
"So let's say you're just starting to talk to a girl, and you want to talk to her as much as you can. Let's say that you talk to her first thing in the morning, and when you have classes with her you say hi. Does it annoy girls if you talk to them and say hi a few times in class?"

Everett,
Well...it really depends on what you're saying. It kind of sounds like all you're saying to this girl is "hi," which, I imagine, can be somewhat irritating. If you're expanding on this, and making small-talk, then I think you're doing just fine. Saying good morning to her, and asking how her day is going, you could be helping to make her morning. You'll become a part of her routine, and, if you're doing everything right, she might even look forward to seeing you first thing. If you're just looming outside of her locker waiting for her to tell her she smells good, then she's probably going to start avoiding her locker in the mornings.

As long as you actually have something to say to her when you're talking to her, then you won't be annoying her. If you're just determined to say hello every time you see her come around the corner, you're going to drive her insane and she's going to get her friends to surround her and protect her in an attempt to avoid contact with you.

03. WHEN DO I ASK? - Franklin
"When should I ask my girlfriend to the prom? It's in the middle of April, and I was thinking of incorporating it into her birthday present next week."

Franklin,
In my experience, it's kind of implied that you're taking your girlfriend to the prom. I never had to compose a fantastic promposal when I was in high school, so maybe I'm missing out on something, but I honestly don't think it's an issue.

If you're really determined to do something special to ask her to the prom, don't do it on her birthday, that's a cop-out. Her birthday is about her birthday, and if you try to combine the two things, it's going to make both of them seem a little less special. If you're going to do something for her birthday, then do something for her birthday, but don't make it about anything else.

If you're still really determined to figure out how to ask her to the prom, just take her for a midnight picnic at the beach and ask her under the stars. Or something more original, I still really don't even understand why you need to ask.
